The Pulse

Like your heartbeat, music has a steady pulse. This is what makes you want to nod your head or tap your foot!

BPM

Beats Per Minute measures how fast the pulse is. 60 BPM = 1 beat per second. 120 BPM = 2 beats per second.

Counting

We count in groups of 4: "1, 2, 3, 4" - this is called 4/4 time, and it's used in almost all popular music!

Fun Fact
The average resting heart rate (60-100 BPM) is similar to chill music tempos. That's why slow songs feel relaxing!

Meet the Drums

Every beat is built from three main sounds. Tap each drum to hear it!

HI-HAT

Kick (Bass Drum)

The deep "boom" that you feel in your chest. It's the foundation of the beat - heavy and low.

Snare

The sharp "crack" or "snap" sound. It provides the backbeat - usually on beats 2 and 4.

Hi-Hat

The "tick-tick-tick" that fills in the gaps. It keeps the rhythm flowing and adds energy.

Try This
Play them together: Kick on "1", Snare on "2", Kick on "3", Snare on "4" - that's a basic beat!
3

The Beat Grid

A beat grid divides one measure into 16 steps. Each row is a drum, each column is a moment in time. Click cells to build a pattern!

16 Steps = 1 Measure

Each step is a 16th note. 4 steps = 1 beat. The whole grid loops as one bar of music.

Downbeats

Steps 1, 5, 9, 13 are the main beats (1, 2, 3, 4). The kick usually lands here.

Building a Beat: Step by Step

Let's build a classic rock beat together. Follow each step!

Step 1: Four on the Floor

Click the KICK on beats 1, 2, 3, 4 (columns 1, 5, 9, 13)

Step 2: The Backbeat

Add SNARE on beats 2 and 4 (columns 5 and 13)

Step 3: Hi-Hat Groove

Add HI-HAT on every other step (columns 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15)

Pro Tip
The "backbeat" (snare on 2 and 4) is what makes music feel groovy. It's the secret sauce in rock, pop, funk, and hip-hop!

Rhythm is the Pulse

Every song has a heartbeat - a steady pulse that everything else follows.

The 4/4 Foundation

Most music uses 4 beats per measure, with 16 steps making up one full bar.

Kick + Snare = Foundation

The kick drum provides the "boom" and the snare provides the "bap" - together they define the groove.

Hi-Hats Fill the Gaps

Hi-hats add energy and movement between the main hits.

Patterns Create Style

Different arrangements of the same drums create rock, hip-hop, house, and more!
