What Is a Beat?

A beat is a repeating rhythmic pattern. At its core, it's just sounds happening at precise moments in time. Let's start with the simplest beat: a kick drum hitting on every beat.

Fun Fact: The first drum machine, the Rhythmicon (1931), was built by a Russian inventor for a music theorist who wanted to hear complex rhythmic patterns that humans couldn't play by hand.

The Step Sequencer

A step sequencer divides time into equal steps (usually 16). Each row is a different sound, and each cell is a yes/no toggle: does this sound play at this step? Click the cells to build a pattern.

Fun Fact: The Roland TR-808, released in 1980, was considered a commercial failure. Today it's one of the most iconic instruments in music history, used on countless hip-hop, pop, and electronic tracks.

Layering Sounds

Each drum sound serves a purpose. The kick provides the foundation, the snare the backbeat, and the hi-hat adds texture. Toggle each layer to hear how they contribute to the whole.

Kick

The low, boomy thump. Provides the pulse and anchors the rhythm. Usually on beats 1 and 3.

Snare

The sharp crack. Provides the backbeat, usually on beats 2 and 4. It's what makes you nod your head.

Hi-Hat

The high, metallic shimmer. Adds movement and subdivides the beat into smaller pulses.

Time Signatures

Not all beats have 4 pulses per measure. The time signature tells you how the beat is grouped. Most pop and rock uses 4/4, but waltzes use 3/4 and many folk songs use 6/8.

Fun Fact: The waltz was considered scandalous when it first became popular in the 1800s because partners danced so close together. Its 3/4 time signature gives it that distinctive "one-two-three" sway.

Beat Recipes: Different Genres

Fun Fact: The "four on the floor" kick pattern (kick on every beat) is the defining feature of house and disco music. It was named after the bass drum pedal technique used by live drummers.
