Wave Shapes & The Pitch Direction Rule

1

Meet the Wave Shapes

Every sound starts with a wave shape - think of it as the "flavor" of the sound. Click each one to see AND hear the difference!

🔊 What Makes Sound?
Sound is vibration - something moving back and forth, pushing air molecules that eventually hit your ear. The pattern of that movement creates the wave shape.

Different vibrations resemble different wave shapes: a tuning fork swings smoothly (sine), old video game chips switched on/off instantly (square), a bowed violin string pulls then snaps back (sawtooth). In sound apps, we can create any pattern we want - that's the magic of digital sound!
Square Wave
Sharp edges create a bright, buzzy sound. Classic 8-bit video game tone!
⚡ Switches instantly between high and low - like a light switch
Retro / Chunky
Sine Wave
Smooth curves create the purest possible tone. Like a whistle or tuning fork - no "texture" at all.
🎢 Glides smoothly up and down - like a perfect swing
Purest / Smoothest
Sawtooth Wave
Ramps up then drops sharply. Harsh and aggressive - great for damage sounds!
🪜 Climbs steadily then drops instantly - like stairs then a slide
Harsh / Buzzy
Triangle Wave
Very similar to sine but with a subtle warmth. Softer than square, gentle but not as pure as sine.
⛰️ Steady climb, steady fall - like a seesaw (smoother than square)
Warm / Gentle
💡 Why Shape Matters
The shape of the wave determines the character of the sound. Square waves sound "chunky" because they switch instantly between high and low. Sawtooth sounds "buzzy" because of its sharp drop. Sine is the purest with no texture at all, while triangle is close but has a subtle warmth. Most game sounds use square or sawtooth because they cut through better!

The Pitch Direction Rule

This is the #1 secret of game sound design: pitch direction creates emotion!

⬆️ Rising Pitch = Positive Feeling
Jump, coin, success, power-up, level up
Low pitch (start) High pitch (end)
⬇️ Falling Pitch = Negative Feeling
Hurt, damage, death, failure, falling
High pitch (start) Low pitch (end)
🧠 Why It Works
Your brain connects pitch direction to physical direction. Rising = going up, gaining, winning. Falling = going down, losing, failing. It's the same reason your voice goes UP when you're excited and DOWN when you're sad!
🎛️ In SoundEffectStudio: You'll use the "Pitch" slider (start) and "End Pitch" slider (end) to control direction. Set End Pitch higher than Pitch for rising, lower for falling!

Recipe: Jump Sound

Let's cook our first sound! A jump needs to feel like lifting off.

🦘 The Jump Recipe
Shape: Square (retro feel)
Pitch: Low → High ⬆️
Duration: 0.15s (quick!)
150 Hz 600 Hz

Try it: Which feels more like a jump?

Flat Pitch
Same note the whole time
Rising Pitch ✓
Goes up = feels like jumping!
4

Recipe: Hurt Sound

Damage sounds use the OPPOSITE of jump - falling pitch feels like losing!

💔 The Hurt Recipe
Shape: Sawtooth (harsh!)
Pitch: High → Low ⬇️
Duration: 0.2s
400 Hz 100 Hz

Compare: Why direction matters for hurt sounds

Rising Pitch
Feels like... gaining? 🤔
Falling Pitch ✓
Feels like losing! 😵
⚡ Notice the Shape Change!
We switched from Square to Sawtooth! The harsh, buzzy sawtooth wave makes damage feel more aggressive and painful. Wave shape + pitch direction = complete emotion control!

Recipe: Heal Sound

Healing and recovery sounds need to feel gentle and soothing - the soft triangle wave is perfect!

💚 The Heal Recipe
Shape: Triangle (soft & gentle)
Pitch: Gentle rise ⬆️ (recovery)
Duration: 0.35s (smooth)
350 Hz 700 Hz

Compare: Why triangle wave feels gentle

Square Wave
Too harsh for healing 💔
Triangle Wave ✓
Soft and soothing 💚
💜 Triangle = Gentle Touch
Triangle waves sound softer than square because they don't have those harsh instant jumps. Perfect for healing, floating, or any sound that needs to feel gentle and non-aggressive. Compare it to square - same pitch, completely different mood!

Mix Your Own

Now you try! Pick a goal, choose your wave shape, and adjust the pitch. Can you make it sound right?
