The Persistence of Vision

Your brain holds onto an image for about 1/25th of a second after seeing it. When images change fast enough, your brain blends them into smooth motion!

Why It Works

Your retina keeps responding to light briefly after exposure. This "persistence" fills the gaps between frames.

Movies Use This

Film runs at 24 frames per second - just fast enough to fool your brain into seeing continuous motion.

Fun Fact
The first motion picture device, the zoetrope (1834), spun images in a drum with slits - creating the same illusion you're seeing now!

Frame Rate: The Speed of Illusion

Frames Per Second

1-6 FPS

Slideshow territory - you clearly see each individual frame.

12 FPS

The minimum for "motion" - classic limited animation (old cartoons).

24 FPS

Film standard - smooth and cinematic. Used in movies for 100+ years.

60 FPS

Ultra smooth - preferred for video games where responsiveness matters.

Pro Tip
Higher FPS isn't always better! 24 FPS has a "cinematic" feel, while 60 FPS looks more like real life (sometimes called the "soap opera effect").

Timing: The Soul of Animation

Two balls can travel the same distance but feel completely different based on timing. The SPACING between frames is everything!

Even Spacing

Same distance each frame = constant speed. Feels mechanical and robotic.

Ease In

Frames start close together, then spread apart. The object accelerates!

Ease Out

Frames start far apart, then get closer. The object slows down naturally.

"Slow In and Slow Out" is one of Disney's 12 Principles of Animation - objects rarely move at constant speed in real life!

Squash & Stretch: Bringing Objects to Life

Real objects deform when they move. A bouncing ball squashes on impact and stretches when moving fast. This principle makes animation feel alive!

Stretch When Moving

Objects elongate in the direction of motion - it shows speed and energy!

Squash On Impact

Objects compress when they hit something - it shows force and weight!

Volume Stays Same

Important rule: when you squash one axis, stretch the other. Total volume shouldn't change!

Fun Fact
The bouncing ball is considered the "Hello World" of animation - every animator learns it first because it teaches timing, spacing, AND squash & stretch!
