What is the Golden Ratio?

The golden ratio is a special number, approximately 1.618, that appears throughout nature, art, and mathematics. The ancient Greeks called it the "divine proportion."

Self-Similar

The golden ratio is unique: it's the only number where 1/φ = φ - 1. This self-similarity creates endless recursive patterns.

Irrational Number

Like π, the golden ratio never ends or repeats. It's exactly (1 + √5) / 2, but we usually round to 1.618.

Fun Fact

The symbol φ (phi) is named after Phidias, the Greek sculptor who used the golden ratio in the design of the Parthenon!

The Fibonacci sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13...) has a magical property: dividing consecutive numbers approaches the golden ratio!

2÷1=2.0, 3÷2=1.5, 5÷3=1.667, 8÷5=1.6, 13÷8=1.625... Each step gets closer to 1.618!

Works Both Ways

The sequence goes backward too: ...−8, 5, −3, 2, −1, 1. Alternating signs, same ratios!

Fun Fact

Leonardo Fibonacci introduced these numbers to Europe in 1202, but they were known in India centuries earlier!

Count the spirals on a sunflower head - you'll often find 34 going one way and 55 the other. Both Fibonacci numbers!

The golden spiral's curve matches the shape of a nautilus shell, a hurricane, and even the arms of spiral galaxies!
