What Is a Voxel?

A pixel is a tiny square of color on a 2D screen. A voxel (volume pixel) is a tiny cube of color in 3D space. Just as pixels build up images, voxels build up 3D objects. The canvas below shows how a flat grid becomes a 3D scene when you add depth.

Fun Fact

The word "voxel" was coined in 1979. But voxel-based rendering was used in flight simulators as early as the 1980s, because it was simpler than polygon math for terrain.

Most 3D games use polygons (triangles) to create smooth surfaces. Voxel games use cubes on a grid. Each approach has strengths.

Smooth surfaces, efficient rendering, good for characters and vehicles. Hard to deform or destroy in real time.

Voxels

Blocky aesthetic, fully destructible, easy to modify in real time. Uses more memory, but every block can change.

Polygon Pros

Smooth at any zoom. Less memory. Industry standard for films and most games.

Voxel Pros

Easy editing. Fully destructible worlds. Natural for terrain, mining, and building games.

Hybrid Approach

Many modern games combine both: voxel terrain with polygon characters and items.

Voxels Beyond Games

Voxels are not just for Minecraft. Any time you need to represent a volume of 3D data, voxels are a natural fit.

Medical Imaging

CT and MRI scans produce voxel data. Each voxel represents tissue density at that point in your body. Doctors slice through 3D voxel volumes to find tumors.

3D Printing

A 3D printer builds layer by layer, essentially creating a physical voxel model. Each layer is a 2D slice of the 3D voxel grid.

Scientific Simulation

Weather models, fluid dynamics, and geological surveys divide space into voxel grids to simulate physical phenomena.

Architecture

Voxel representations let architects analyze sunlight, airflow, and structural load at every point in a building design.

Fun Fact

Minecraft's world is about 60 million meters wide. At one block per meter, that is 3.6 x 10^16 possible voxel positions. Fortunately, the game only generates chunks near the player.
