Frequency & Wavelength

Frequency is how fast the wave oscillates (cycles per second, measured in Hertz). Wavelength is the distance between peaks. They're inversely related!

High Frequency

AM vs FM: Encoding Information

A plain radio wave carries no information. To send music or voice, we "modulate" (change) the wave. AM and FM are two different methods.

AM (Amplitude Modulation)

The wave HEIGHT changes to encode the signal

FM (Frequency Modulation)

The wave SPEED changes to encode the signal

AM Radio (530-1700 kHz)

Simpler, travels farther, but more susceptible to interference (static during storms).

FM Radio (88-108 MHz)

Better sound quality, less interference, but shorter range. That's why FM stations are local!

Why FM Sounds Better
AM encodes audio in the wave's amplitude - electrical interference also affects amplitude, causing static. FM encodes in frequency, which interference doesn't affect as much!

Tuning In: Finding Your Station

Radio stations broadcast on specific frequencies. Your radio "tunes" to receive only that frequency while ignoring others.
