When you play online, your actions travel to a server and back. Ping measures how long that round trip takes!
Ping includes BOTH the trip to the server AND the response back. That's why it's called "round-trip time" (RTT).
Ping is measured in milliseconds (ms). 1000ms = 1 second. Most games need under 100ms to feel responsive.
