The Art of Typing: Speed, Accuracy, and Flow

Whether you are writing code, chatting with friends, or building a website, faster typing means faster creating.
Think about it: programmers spend hours every day typing code. A developer who types 60 WPM instead of 30 WPM can write code twice as fast. That adds up to hundreds of hours saved per year. But speed is only half the story. Accuracy matters even more, because every mistake means stopping, backspacing, and retyping.
The world record for typing speed is 216 WPM, set by Stella Pajunas in 1946 on an IBM electric typewriter. Modern records on computer keyboards are around 300 WPM in short bursts.
Click the box below and type the sentence. Watch your WPM and accuracy update in real time.
WPM = (characters typed / 5) / minutes. The "5" represents an average word length. So typing 250 characters in 1 minute = 50 WPM. Simple!
Most people fall in the 30-50 WPM range. See where your speed from the demo above places you.
Every fast typist uses the home row as their base. Your fingers rest on these 8 keys and reach for everything else.
The F and J keys have small bumps on them. That is how you find the home row without looking. Place your index fingers on F and J, and the rest of your fingers naturally fall into place. From here, each finger is responsible for specific keys above and below.
Do not look at your keyboard. It feels slow at first, but your brain builds muscle memory surprisingly fast. Within a week of practice, you will be faster than you were while looking.
The terminal has a built-in typing game with leaderboards. Here is how to get started:
Every race earns XP based on your speed: 5 XP at 20+ WPM, up to 50 XP at 100+ WPM. Your first race each day earns a +10 XP bonus. Race the daily challenge and compete on the leaderboard!
You now know why typing speed matters and how WPM is calculated. Time to put your skills to the test.
Words Per Minute measures how fast you type. Most people type 30-40 WPM. Professional typists hit 80-100+.
Fast typing with lots of errors is slower than steady typing with high accuracy. Fix mistakes early.
Keep your fingers on ASDF and JKL; as a base. Reach for other keys and return. Muscle memory builds over time.
Typing random text is OK, but typing real code and commands builds the muscle memory that matters most.
