Homeschool withdrawal letter, notice of intent and enrollment letter

Pick your state and fill in your family once. The page writes the notice your state asks for, or sends you to the official form where the state requires one, plus a letter withdrawing your child from school and an enrollment letter for driver's ed, insurance or a job.

Print, sign in ink, and keep a copy of everything you send.

Sending it

Send notices so you can prove when they arrived: certified mail with a return receipt, or email if your district accepts it and you keep the sent message. Withdraw your child only after any notice your state requires has been filed, so there is no gap where the school can count absences.

This page writes letters from what our state guides say the law requires. It is general information, not legal advice. Read your state's guide for the full rules and the citations.

Reference information reviewed August 2026 against primary sources (statutes, NCAA and Common App published requirements). This is general information, not legal advice; requirements change, so verify anything load-bearing for your family against your state's current law.

Homeschool letter questions

Do I need to send a letter to withdraw my child to homeschool?

Usually yes, and always wise. Some states tie the withdrawal to a notice you file with the district or the state; others require nothing but recommend telling the school in writing so your child is not reported truant. Send it after any required notice is filed, and keep a copy.

Can I write my own notice of intent instead of using a form?

In states where the law sets only what the notice must say, such as Ohio, New York, Florida and Virginia, a signed letter with those contents works. States that require their own form or online portal, such as California, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Washington, need that form. This page tells you which is which.

What is an enrollment letter for?

Driver education, car insurance good-student discounts, jobs, sports, and programs that ask for proof a student is enrolled. It comes from you as the school administrator. Some uses have an official form of their own, such as the Texas driver license verification of enrollment.
