Hat Lab: Design a Sun Hat to a Client's Brief

Grades 4-8 · 45 minutes · Engineering, Math

A summer camp sends back the ball cap it ordered: the counselors' necks and ears burn by lunch. Students read the camp's brief, four requirements with numbers in them, and find that the cap can never pass, because its bill only shades the front. They design a hat in Hat Lab that fits a 56 cm head, has a brim of at least 76 mm (3 inches) all the way around, stays under 12 cm tall and carries the camp's name, check each requirement against the measurements under the hat, and hand it to a classmate who signs off the brief.

Hat Lab: Hat Sizes and Pi

Grades 6-8 · 45 minutes · Math, Engineering

A US hat size like 7 1/8 is not a length you can find anywhere on the hat. Students discover that it is the head's circumference in inches divided by pi: the width the head would have if it were a perfect circle. They measure, convert centimeters to inches, divide by pi and round to the nearest eighth, then check each answer in Hat Lab, and find why every centimeter around the head adds one eighth to the size.
