Robotics lesson plans

Each one is a class period with everything to run it: a teacher plan, a student worksheet, an exit ticket with answers, and the standards it meets. Students need no account, and a free class saves their work.

Robotics: Follow a Line with One Sensor

Grades 5-8 · 45 minutes · Computer science, Engineering

Students run a simulated robot that follows a black line using one light sensor. They watch the sensor read about 16 over the line and about 100 over the white mat, and find the program's rule: below 58, turn one way; otherwise, turn the other way, checked over and over. They predict what a gentler turn will do, see the robot run off the mat at the first curve, and then test other turn values as a class. By the end, they can explain how one sensor and one cut-off number keep a robot on a line it cannot see ahead of.
