Tilemap Editor: How Big Is This Level?

Grades 3-5 · 45 minutes · Math

Grassy Hills is a video game level made of square tiles, 40 across and 14 down. Students measure it the way the game does: they count the tiles in the hill, then find a faster way by multiplying its sides, and check with the editor's Select tool, which reports the size of whatever they drag over. Then they split the whole ground into rectangles and add the parts, read where things are by column and row, and build a castle of exactly 24 tiles from two rectangles.
